Trying Two Lipstick Recipes from 1924
I haven't made makeup in ages and thought it would be fun to try out two different lipstick recipes from the 1920s! While these aren't my favourite base, they are ridiculously quick and easy to make, very moisturizing, plus give decent pigment-results.

Vanilla Rose "Snow Cream" ~ Historical Cold Cream Recipe ~
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.8 месяцев назад
This week, I'm trying another historical cold cream recipe. Well technically I'm blending two recipes together: one from the 1920s and another from the Edwardian period. It is a rich, silky cream with a sweet rose scent. Perfect for chapped winter hands or as a rich body lotion (it can be used on the face too if you like a heavier moisturizer or just use a small dab). Hope my mom likes her Chri...
One Minute Edwardian Beauty Recipes: Holiday Edition

I tried 5 different beauty recipes this week from the late Edwardian period and the 1910s. The recipes (a simple hand moisturizer, a lip balm, a fizzy bath powder, and two different perfumes/room sprays) were selected as they are either great for this chilly time of year or because they would make a great quick gift (or both!). Plus all of them can be made in approximately a minute or so! FIND ...

1920s True Daytime & Evening Makeup

This is a great recipe, thank you. I added Marie Rayma's 3 ingredients: sericite mica, magnesium stearate and boron nitride, aling with 20 drops of Jojoba oil and 5 VE. I used Maries tinting recipe in her book for fair skin adjusted just a bit and this is a wonderful powder, very nice light coverage and silky smooth. WOW, who knew. The seasonal swap method is something I learned from my mother. Another version I've heard of is the "Calendar Wardrobe" detailed in The Ladies' Home Journal article "How I Dressed on $50 a Year", published September 1911. There are twelve boxes, labeled for the months of the year. Spring and fall clothes switch boxes at the end of their respective seasons, with the thinner pieces going to the warmer months. Having things separated further seems to do away with that "nothing to wear" moment at the changing of the seasons, when it's suddenly too warm or too cool for what you currently have. I have found that the best way to do the twice-a-year seasonal swap is to do one last load of laundry, then fold and pack it away. Those are the clothes you wear the most, so they're the ones you want the most. Only what remains needs to be looked at thoroughly.

It also helps to start with some product build up. It will help the styles hold better. Dippity do before you put your curlers in at night and then hairspray to set the style in the morning works well for me. Freshly washed hair is very difficult to work with.

Thank you for this. I'm a historical fashion scholar and costumed museum interpreter. If your area has them, I strongly recommend going to a Black hair store. It's easier to find good long wave clips there, and larger stores occasionally have wave irons.

I listed the source of the recipe in the video so you can look it up if you want (it's on archive.org). A lot of lipsticks from this time had either coal-dyes or carmine as their pigment, but this recipe was a bit different. One pigment option was a turmeric-based extract and I think the other one might have been extracted for alkanet based on the name (neither of which I could find available for purchase for the home-crafter).

You need this clips not for waving on their own. In addition there are blended combs. You fingerwave your hair in an s pattern with your hand and a fine normal comb. For the vale you use the blended combs to hold it for the mountain top you use the clips to secure the s pattern. I did it like my grandma told me, worked. She had no natural curls, I have.

Hi Kate, thanks for another cute lippie video! Have you tried using reusable piping bags (usually for frostings) to "pipe" the lipstick into the tubes? Recipe Notes: - Be sure to use makeup-grade, lip-safe pigments only. - If you prefer “tinted lipbalm” look rather than a full lipstick, add in less pigment. Or you could omit the pigment entirely and just use this recipe as a lipbalm base. - Some pigments may be stronger or weaker than others, so if you are not using the iron oxide you may need to experiment a bit to figure out how much is best to add. - Botanical pigments such as alkanet may require extra steps. (Alkanet needs to be steeped in warmed oil first to release the pigment then strained out) - Another liquid oil can be swapped in for the olive oil / almond oil (although some might wear better than others) - The vitamin E oil is entirely optional, but will help the oils stay fresh for longer and thus extend the shelf-life of the lipstick.

I commented this on the original video, but for anyone who's wondering, this works really well in hot weather! I made some recently (poured into a tube) and it's been very consistently good across wild temperature swings and stays pretty much the same texture when carried in a pants pocket. Highly recommend! And it lasts longer on the lips than any other lip balm I've used. Also, it's a pretty natural finish (not visibly shiny) and works very well under lipstick
